Raw vs Ripe Pu-erh: what overseas buyers should know

Raw Pu-erh (sheng) is sun-dried and naturally aged. Young raw tea is bright, floral and sometimes bracing, and it transforms over years of storage — which is why collectors prize single-origin and single-tree lots.

Ripe Pu-erh (shou) is pile-fermented to give a smooth, mellow, jujube-and-aged character that is ready to drink now and is gentle on the stomach. It suits everyday wholesale and customers new to Pu-erh.

For a balanced range, most importers stock a sweet, approachable raw Pu-erh, a clean ripe cake, and one or two flagship single-origin teas such as Bingdao or Banzhang. We can recommend a starter assortment and send samples with full tasting notes before you commit to a wholesale order.
